Hannah Joynt | BIO < back to artists

Born in 1985, I grew up on my grandparent’s farm in Tokoroa in the South Waikato. In
2003 I moved to Dunedin to go to art school. I graduated the Bachelor of Fine arts with a
major in painting in 2006. My understanding and relationship with paint is an on going and
infinitive journey, one that never seems to tire.

I have been showing my work in Dunedin and Christchurch since graduating, and intend
on exhibiting in the North Island in the not to distant future. I have had solo exhibitions at
COCA Christchurch (2009, 2010) and Dunedin at the Temple Gallery (2011). I exhibit regularly
in group shows and enter competitions. I was the 2009 winner of the COCA Anthony
Harper Award for Contemporary Art. The Judge Hamish Keith said the work (Place Getters
in a Long Distance Race) “took my imagination to some entirely new and unfamiliar place”.
Along side my practice as an artist I am keen surfer and tramper, thus Dunedin is an inspiring
place to be based. I also work part time teaching drawing, painting and illustration in
the Design Department at Otago Polytechnic. Both teaching and the outdoors influence my
art making. Painting is a form of dialoged that I have in response to my experiences.
