SUE SCOBIE | BIO < back to artists

Sue Scobie works from her home studio in Nelson, after recently relocating from Wellington.

She first started working with ceramics part time at HornsbyTAFE, Northern Sydney in the early 1990's.  At the same time, she was also studying full time for a Master of Science (Ecotoxicology) at the University of Technology in Sydney.   Unfortunately something had to give for Sue - so she forgo the ceramics interest, returned to New Zealand and pursued a full-time, sience-based career ... however in 2009 'ceramics' lured her again and after four years of studying & working she completed a Diplome in Ceramic Art from the Otago School of Art .

Sue takes inspiration from the 'world around  (her)' -...  " the colours, forms, sounds & textures of the land, sea & bush are limitless.  My work aims to capture the essence of our wild places & is intendedfor quiet contemplation in a world which is far too busy".

Scobie loves the tactile nature of unglazed surfaces and the subtlety of finishes that can be achieved without a glaze is evident in her hand-formed work.  She uses combinations of porcelain and stoneware clays with the silky transluscent porcelain contrasting with the rough, gritty stoneware.

Scobie has works in private collections throughout New Zealand, Australia, USA & japan and on permanent exhibition at the Fu-Le International Ceramics Museum in China.

The Artist's Room Fine Art Gallery is thrilled to be able to bring you works by this wonderful emerging artist.
