Biography

Hilary Jowle is a Waikato-based glass artist who uses the traditional, Tiffany and mosaic methods to create multi-layered, sculptural, unique pieces of art.

Originally trained as a primary teacher in south Auckland, it was during her time spent abroad in the UK, that she first discovered her love of working with glass - drawing on and influenced by her childhood on the edge of the Manukau Harbour, with its dramatic skies and ever changing moods, and her time spent in Yorkshire and Cornwall, her work captures images, colours and textures, her memories and her observances, using a technique that she has developed.

The image begins with the glass itself.  It is discovered, rather than imposed, to emerge as the final piece. They are carefully layered, often using textured glass to create form, depth and perspective
